I'm going to elaborate on my previous post, for those of you who may have gotten lost and confused in the vagueness of it all. (I don't blame you.)
Pharmacy school costs lots of money. This is something Jared and I didn't realize until just recently. For some reason, we figured it would just cost the same as any good ole' regular tuition at any random college. This isn't the case! It actually costs $22,000+ per year. The school we are looking at is Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. It is a little more expensive than U of U (which is about $25,000/yr) at $39,000/yr. However, it is a 3-year program rather than a 4-year program (U of U is 4 years.) In the end, it's only about $20,000 more than U of U. But you get to graduate one year earlier and start making the Pharmacist salary, which means we could start paying back the loan earlier as well. We're still flexible with where we will go - things may change and we may choose U of U in the end - but for now, Midwestern is our goal.
Having said all of that, it will still be 2 or 3 more years of school at UVU before we can even apply to pharmacy school. So in the meantime, it would be smart to save as much money as possible, right? So our solution: move in with Jared's parents!!
We wouldn't have even thought to move in with them, but they had specifically mentioned that we could move in if we ever needed to for whatever reason. We are only bringing in about $15 a month, after rent, bills, groceries, etc. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we've been bringing in a negative amount the last few months. We have no ability whatsoever to pay for tuition at the moment, and we weren't able to get a grant. So in order to get a move-on with school, we have to head in a different direction and make some big changes. Consequently, we are moving! It's just a matter of getting someone else to take over our contract, selling things we won't be able to take with us, and then we're outta here. I can't comprehend the kindness of his parents right now. They are kind beyond comprehension!
The other part that I mentioned in my last post was studying books, passing an exam, and having the same job. Some of you may know that I was planning on going to Mountainland Applied Technology College this fall to become certified as a Pharmacy Technician. Well, I recently learned that you don't need to go through school to become certified - you simply need to pass the PTCB exam. So I ordered two PTCB study books on Amazon and Jared and I will work together to study and pass the exam and, hopefully, get jobs as Pharmacy Techs. Tuition would have been around $1000 for the class, so this should save us quite a bit of money and time. We'll keep you updated!
oh my freako. why did you never tell me about your pharmacy technician goals? i'm hurted. i'm proud of you lady! that's really coolness! is it a lot of money to take the test? i want to know stuff. so tell me stuff. pwease.
ReplyDeleteAre those out of state or in state tuition costs? Usually, in state tuition is considerably less than out of state. Actually at ASU, it is less than half! Out of state it about $20,000 and in state is about $7500. Also, you might look into TA positions. Justin was a TA, and he got a pretty big discount on tuition. Just a thought. Good luck with your decisions!
ReplyDeleteShari - The price for U of U tuition is in-state and the price for Midwestern is the same for everyone because it's a private college. But we'll have to look into the TA option!
