We had our 2 month appointment with the pediatrician yesterday. Everything went great, and Isaac is a super healthy and happy baby! We are so grateful.
Not that these numbers are super important, but here they are anyway:
Weight - 67th percentile
Length - 22nd percentile
Head Circumference - 57th percentile
That was the main thing that we did at the appointment. Normally he would have gotten shots, but we are doing a delayed schedule so he won't be getting those for a little while.
However, I did bring up the fact that I had noticed that Isaac has a dent in his chest, and I asked if that was normal. The doctor took a look at him and said he has Pectus Excavatum, which is basically just when the ribs curve inward rather than outward. He mentioned that one of his sons has it as well, and it's usually only a cosmetic 'birth defect' - it usually doesn't impact their health or lung/heart function in any way. Here's a picture I just took to demonstrate what it looks like:
(Psst... look at his cute cloth diaper! More on that later...)
Most of the time it doesn't look too dramatic, though - I just managed to catch him during a hiccup session. Oh man, it looks freaky when he hiccups/coughs/etc. But most of the time it looks less obvious, like here:
Anyway, the reason I am posting this is because I'm curious if anyone in our family (including Jared's side) has this as well? Sometimes there can be a hereditary connection, so I'm wondering if we have family members with this condition and just didn't realize it... Let me know in the comments! (And if you don't know, you can always just comment on how darn cute he is!) ;)
He sure is darn cute, I agree.
ReplyDeleteHe is so handsome! They grow up too quickly! I want to know more of what's going on! Is jared working and school? are you a stay home mommy? etc etc etc :)
ReplyDeleteI just googled pectus excavatum and this post came up. My four month old daughter appears to have this. Can I ask has your sons gotten better? Has anyone mentioned surgery? I just wondered if it can get less noticeable with time. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply. No one has mentioned surgery. It does seem to look better with time. His chest still curves in slightly but most people probably wouldn't even notice it unless you pointed it out to them. :)
DeleteWhen I had my son Eastyn, the nurse's told me that the dent in the chest was normal. I was researching some stuff and came across a website that defined the disorder. My other son Wyatt does not have a dent in his chest; although I have not confirmed it with the doctor, I am sure that my newborn has this condition.
ReplyDeleteThe doctor mentioned that he also has a heart murmur which can be accompanied with this condition. So I am very concerned and will bring it up at Eastyn's next visit. My mom has a heart condition; however, to my knowledge no dent in her chest. She has had surgeries to correct it; Mitral Valve Prolapse and a Aortic Aneurysm. I pray that Eastyn won't have to endure surgeries in the future?? Heart Conditions are congenital on my mom's side.
I don't want to scare you; I am glad that your baby is healthy. Eastyn aside is very healthy. Sometimes this condition can be stand alone with little complication and sometimes accompanied with other disorders. There can be surgery to correct it if it's severe; however, it is pretty invasive from what I have read.
Congrat's on the birth of your baby and my best.
Thank you for letting me know. So far, we have had no reason to believe he has any heart problems. I will definitely update this post if we learn differently.
DeleteHi Alisa,
ReplyDeleteWe just noticed our 3 month old has the same indentation when hiccuping. Almost identical size etc as Isaac's. Just wondering wether this has improved once they are walking around and wether there is any physical distress for them when running and playing. Does it still do the same depression when hiccuping as they get older?
Thanks
Nyree
Hi Nyree,
DeleteI know you just posted this a few minutes ago, but I'm online right now so I'll just go ahead and answer! :)
It does seem as though it has improved now that he is a toddler. I don't think many people would notice it if he was running around without a shirt. If anything, I think it might just make his stomach seem like it's poking out a little more (if that makes sense), but that's it. He doesn't seem to be affected by it at all! He has lots of energy and runs around without any lack of breath. It also seems less dramatic when he hiccups. It's definitely still there, just not as obvious. :) Thanks for commenting!
Like to now how your little one looks like now. Do you have a photo?
ReplyDeleteMy kid 1 year has it ass well. My husband also. Runs in his familie
I read the younger they have it the worse it can grow. Here they only do surgery when they are full grown.. I saw they use a brace and 90% good results. In the states they use it ass well..
Like to hear now after your child is a fer years older.. regards melanie - netherlands
Hi, both my sons (6 and 10) have this. Neither of them are self conscious about it, they both swim twice weekly and.noone ever comments. But I know of a teenage boy who had to have surgery as he got so breathless after exercise. I'm really hoping my.boys won't need surgery. How is your son doing now in 2017? Is he still this gorgeous?!
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for sharing your story. My 14 month old baby has a similar case, he just learnt how to walk now, not noticing any difficulties breathing, however, in your experience, did the condition stay the same with time? Increase, decrease? Thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe my son has had any problems with breathing due to his condition. It's not as noticeable now (he is 6 1/2 now) - but it's definitely still there. He does have some coughing after he's been running around, but I kind of think that's more of an exercise-induced asthma issue than a pectus excavatum issue. It'd be interesting to know if there is a connection there, though. He's a very active, happy kid - the condition doesn't seem to slow him down at all! :)
